Stryker launches new coil shape for new possibilities in aneurysm treatment

Stryker announced the 510k clearance of the Target Tetra Detachable Coil, the latest addition to the market-leading Target platform. The Target Tetra Detachable Coil combines a new tetrahedral shape and softness level, specifically designed to treat small aneurysms.

The delicate nature of small aneurysms makes the use of soft coils extremely important but historically, soft coils have not had strong shape stability. The Target Tetra Detachable Coil is unique because the tetrahedral shape is designed to frame small aneurysms with ease, while being the softest coil in the Target family.

“Target Tetra is very high performing and easy to use because the tetrahedral shape allows it to stay inside the aneurysm with minimal microcatheter manipulation. This will allow physicians of all skill sets to feel more confident when treating small aneurysms, which will help many patients!” said Satoshi Tateshima, MD, DMSc, interventional neuroradiologist, Los Angeles, CA.

“The Target platform has a proven legacy, and the launch of Target Tetra reflects our commitment to partnering with our customers to develop innovative products,” said Mark Paul, President of Stryker’s Neurovascular Division. “I am excited to add Target Tetra to our portfolio because it provides a new option for patients with smaller, more difficult-to-treat aneurysms, and will ultimately help physicians treat more aneurysm patients.”

About brain aneurysms and coiling

An aneurysm occurs when part of a blood vessel becomes weak, causing the vessel to balloon or bulge and fill with blood. Aneurysms can occur in any blood vessel in the body; however, brain aneurysms are the most life-threatening. If left untreated, the aneurysm may continue to weaken until it bursts and bleeds in the brain. Almost 500,0001 deaths occur each year as a result of a brain aneurysm. Coils are a minimally invasive solution for treating aneurysms. They come in different materials (usually platinum) and are soft and pliable to conform to the shape of the aneurysm. The coils are placed directly in an aneurysm to prevent blood from flowing into the aneurysm.
